Evaluating medical techniques
The Centre has specifically developed its biological research on oncology. The main themes are :
- evaluation and validation of tumour markers,
- pharmacokinetics of anticancer drugs, to enable treatment regimes to be adapted to the individual patient,
- oncogene expression in tumours and their clinical significance,
- molecular biology methods for the detection of residual disease after treatment,
- quantification of tumour DNA by flow cytometry and image analysis.
Pharmacists form the academic department are involved in research in our laboratory for clinical and experimental biochemistry, which has enabled basic research projects such as :
- cellular pharmacology (research into modulators of anticancer drugs)
- cellular biology (adhesion of tumour cells)
- experimental therapy (research and selection of new anticancer molecules)
- cancerogenesis (molecular study of the influence of tobacco and alcohol on oropharyngeal cancers)

There is a close collaboration between many research teams in Caen and others outside our region. Among these : Research Centre for Drug Development (Centre de Recherche sur le Médicament de Normandie), the Pharmacology Research Group (G.R.P), the School of Engineering (Institut Supérieur de la Matière et du Rayonnement - I.S.M.R.A.), the Medical Cyclotron (CYCERON), the International Centre for Cancer Research (C.I.R.C. - Lyon, WHO).
