Transmission of medical information via computers
Since 1986, all medical records are computerised
Very few hospitals are fortunate enough to have this facility. Since the Centre was opened our medical records have gathered clinical, radiological and biological data in a unique record, in order to treat patients with a comprehensive record of his or her clinical history. The regular and meticulous record keeping promotes quality of care and helps in the progress of clinical research. Skilled medical secretaries, combined with rigorous organisation to ensure that records are updated, have been the major factor in acquiring complete information.
Since 1986, the medical records were computerised. Each health care professional can access the record at any time from one of 180 different computer stations. Personal access codes allows limited access at different levels to ensure medical confidentiality. In 1988, this system was connected to the laboratory auto-analysers which allowed the immediate entry of laboratory results onto the record.
In the near future radiology imaging will be digitalized (MEDIMAGE project, see below), and external medical documents will be automatically word scanned. Computer expert system techniques (ONCOLOG project, see below) and computer artificial intelligence, combined with vocal recognition for writing medical reports, will further increase the day to day efficiency and practical use of the system.
