This year, the Société Francophone d'Onco-Gériatrie (SOFOG) is spearheading a groundbreaking national initiative: the creation of a national day dedicated to cancer in the elderly, to be held for the first time on October 9, 2025, in line with the objectives of Semaine Bleue.
Every year, at the beginning of October, Semaine Bleue highlights the essential role played by senior citizens in our society, encourages links between generations, and promotes the voice of retired people and the work of associations.
The aim of the October 9 event is to raise awareness, mobilize action and increase recognition of the problem of cancer among the elderly, who are still under-represented in screening, prevention and information campaigns.
The figures speak for themselves:
- Over 50% of colorectal cancers,
- One-third of breast cancers,
- And over 70% of prostate cancers occur in people aged 70 and over.
Mobilization at the Baclesse Center
To mark the occasion, an information stand will be set up in the lobby of the Centre Baclesse on October 9, from 8am to 4pm.
- Dr Marianne HAMON (oncogeriatrician) and Lucie COQUEREL (oncogeriatric nurse) will be on hand to chat with visitors.
- A dietician will speak on the subject of undernutrition in the elderly.
- Dr Anne CANIVET (practitioner hygienist, healthcare risk management coordinator) will present vaccination recommendations for the over 65s.
