Research activity
Since 1983, Normandy has been home to a world-class nuclear physics research center: GANIL (Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds). More recently, an integrated scientific program on hadrontherapy has been voluntarily set up by local authorities and university and scientific bodies: the ARCHADE program.
The ARCHADE program brings together hadrontherapy research, care and technological innovation on a single site. Hadrontherapy is a form of radiotherapy that uses accelerated proton and ion beams to treat radioresistant tumors.
Supported by the Normandy Region, this program is part of a range of equipment and teams involved in fundamental and applied research in the fields of physics (atomic physics, medical physics, radiobiology, etc.).
Through its investment, the Normandy Region is firmly committed to the application of physics to healthcare, and is developing the first research center to boast a unique prototype superconducting cyclotron.
Research teams will be welcomed to develop their work using the laboratories and beams available in this center, housed in the SAS CYCLHAD building.
