Department missions
Healthcare mission
The pathology department analyses specimens collected during consultations, hospitalisations and surgical procedures. These specimens include biopsies, resection specimens with or without extemporaneous analysis and cytology specimens. The department also receives specimens from external sources (requests for medical opinion, requests for immunihistochemical and molecular biology analysis, participation in clinical trials, etc.)
The administrative management of requests for molecular biology analyses sent to the GENECAN platform (receipt of specimens and transmission of results) is entrusted to the pathology department secretaries. Laboratory technicians are involved in preanalytical operations (cutting on the microtome and staining). Pathologists are also requested to check the quality of the specimen to be analysed.
The department looks after the cryoconservation of medical specimens as per INCa (French National Cancer Institute) recommendations. The department enables the implementation of tissue banks and cell banks through the cryoconservation of specimens, parrafin blocks and the forwarding of fresh specimens to the INSERM U1086 ANTICIPE Unit.
Research mission
The department’s pathologists contribute towards MDT activities by attending MDT meetings and participating in MDT scientific projects.
The pathology department works in close collaboration with the clinical research department: cryoconservation of specimens, slides, paraffin blocks, provision and selection of blocks and slides requested within the framework of clinical trial protocols.
Teaching mission
The department acts as a host laboratory for training: interns in medicine, university and technical diploma students.
