Department tasks

The main mission of the anesthesia team is to ensure the safety and comfort of patients throughout their perioperative care, from the anesthesia consultation to discharge from hospital after surgery.

The anesthesia team also has a number of cross-functional missions:

  • Care: placement of venous access lines, management of life-threatening emergencies throughout the facility.
  • Close collaboration with other teams at the Center and participation in Commissions: CUV (Commission Urgence Vitale), pain team and CLUD (Comité de LUtte contre la Douleur), nutrition team and CLAN (Comité de Liaison Alimentaire et Nutrition), hemovigilance and CSTH (Comité de Sécurité Transfusionnelle et d'Hémovigilance), quality department, pharmacy and COMEDIMS (COmmission du MEdicament et des Dispositifs Médicaux Stériles) etc...
  • Teaching: AFGSU (Attestation de Formation aux Gestes et Soins d'Urgence) training, intern training, life-saving emergency situations in the operating theater, etc.
  • University-trained: an anesthesia intern is part of the team and works in the operating room, in consultation and in the continuous care unit, always under the supervision of a senior anesthesiologist.
  • Research: research projects for theses or dissertations, participation in research projects with other healthcare establishments, etc.

Our care activities

Expertise

  • General anaesthesia: highly versatile anaesthesia team, techniques adapted to the type of operation, the patient's state of health and specific to cancer care (Opioid Free Anaesthesia Technique, mastery of difficult intubation techniques). Particular expertise in the perioperative management of major surgeries not performed in other healthcare establishments (e.g. CHIP, complex sarcoma resection, etc.).
  • Locoregional anesthesia: combined with GA (General Anesthesia) or on its own, for better management of post-operative pain and improved recovery after surgery (spinal anesthesia for digestive and gynecological surgery, specific locoregional anesthesia techniques for breast surgery, etc.).
  • Hypnosis: Medical hypnosis is part of a drive to improve the quality of patient care in the operating theatre and surgical department. Several medical and paramedical professionals on the anesthesia team are currently being trained in hypnosis. A video on positive communication has been produced to raise awareness among all OR staff.
  • Placement of central venous lines (notably picclines) under local anesthetic, at the request of other practitioners at the Center, to enable the administration of certain specific treatments.
  • PICU(Multi-Purpose Intensive Care Unit) and emergency management: management of peri-operative nutrition in conjunction with the EMAN team, post-operative pain, post-operative complications.
  • Enhanced Rehabilitation after Surgery (ERS ): the anesthesia team plays an active role in the ERS approach, enabling faster recovery after surgery.
  • Personalized blood capital management: to optimize perioperative care, the anesthesia team pays particular attention to the management of anemia (low hemoglobin = lack of red blood cells). Appropriate management is proposed on a case-by-case basis, depending on the type of operation and the specific situation of each patient.
  • Green Bloc: a sustainable development approach in the operating room, initiated by nurse anesthetists and followed by all operating room staff.

Specific training courses

All the team's anesthetists are multi-skilled, practicing in the operating room, in consultation and in the PICU. They are committed to training throughout their careers, so that they can provide the best possible care for the Center's patients, in line with the latest medical advances.

  • Local-regional anesthesia and pain management: Drs Mulac-Vauclair and Lafosse hold a DU in LRA. Dr Leprince holds a DIU in pain management.
  • Hypnosis: Dr Dessaux has been practicing hypnosis for several years. Stéphanie Gibier, IADE, is also trained in hypnosis.
  • Cardiac ultrasound: Dr Leprince holds a DIU in ultrasound techniques in intensive care (cardiac ultrasound option) and Dr Verrier holds a DIU in cardiac ultrasound.
  • Resuscitation: Dr Coquerel holds a DU in infectious pathology resuscitation and a DESC in medical resuscitation. Dr Verrier holds a post-graduate diploma (DESC) in medical intensive care and a post-graduate diploma (DIU) in the management of patients in nephrology intensive care.
  • Healthcare simulation: Michèle Marie, IADE, is a healthcare simulation trainer.
  • Practical training in pediatric anesthesia for the entire team.
  • Adapted physical activity: Dr Coquerel has a degree in sports medicine.

Service equipment

  • PICU (Continuous Intensive Care Unit): scopes, ventilators, defibrillator
  • Operating room, recovery room (SSPI Salle de Surveillance Post-Interventionnelle) and interventional radiology and brachytherapy rooms: scopes, ventilators, defibrillators, ultrasound scanners, virtual reality headset, anesthesia depth and analgesia depth monitors, curarization monitors, solute warmers and heating blankets, esophageal Doppler, Pulsioflex hemodynamic monitor.

Research areas / Projects

  • E-consult: an interactive visual aid for delivering anaesthesia information to the patient during consultation
  • Development of tele-consultation: depending on the type of operation, some patients may benefit from remote anesthesia consultation.
  • Thoracic peridural anesthesia: introduction of this locoregional anesthesia technique, beneficial for certain procedures
  • Integrating adaptedphysical activity into the Enhanced Post-Surgical Rehabilitation approach

Partnerships

Regional level: Caen University Hospital and University of Caen for interns and IADE students, and participation in research projects.

National level: Institut Curie for practical training in pediatric anesthesia and proton therapy

Training courses

  • Initial training: AFGSU
  • Continuing education: AFGSU "recyclage
  • Courses at IFSI (IADE school)
