Department tasks
Care mission
The Pathology Department deals with samples taken during consultations, hospital stays and operations. These samples include biopsies, excised parts with or without extemporaneous examination, and cytologies. The department also receives samples referred by external services (requests for advice, immunohistochemical and molecular biology tests, participation in therapeutic trials, etc.).
The Pathology Department secretariat handles the administrative aspects of molecular biology examination requests to GENECAN (receipt of material and dispatch of results). Laboratory technicians help with pre-analytical techniques (microtome sectioning and staining). Pathologists are also called in to check the quality of the sample to be analyzed.
The department carries out cryopreservation of samples for health purposes, in line with INCA recommendations. The department supports the implementation of tissue and cell banks by producing cryopreservation and kerosene blocks, and by transmitting fresh samples to the teams of the Inserm U1086 ANTICIPE Unit.
The list of available analyses can be consulted on Thesi.
Research mission
The department's pathologists support the work of the UCP by taking part in organ RCPs and UCP scientific projects.
The Pathology Department collaborates closely with the Clinical Research Department: the department carries out cryopreservation of samples, slides, kerosene blocks, discharges and selections of blocks and slides requested in clinical trial protocols.
Teaching mission
The department is a training ground for medical interns and IUT and BTS students.

Accreditation
The Pathology Department has been accredited since October 2018. The deployment of the quality approach within the anatomo-cyto-pathology laboratory has enabled the BioPathology Department to be accredited under No. 8-3264. The scope lines are available on the Cofrac website: www.cofrac.fr
Activity data
The pathology department's activity, which comes from prescribers at the Centre Baclesse and external establishments, increased by an overall +2% in 2024.
The increase concerns biopsies (+ 1%), excisions (+ 2%) and cytologies (+ 3%). Requests for immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization are also on the rise (+4%).
Despite these increases, response times remain stable (4 working days for biopsies, 5 working days for cytologies and 9 working days for excisions).
Research areas / Projects
Pathologists work with the INSERM BioTICLA research unit:
- Development of immunohistochemistry antibodies and reading of immunohistochemistry slides
- Participation in research on organoids
- Participation in research work on the theme of quantitative histo-imaging
Useful documents for healthcare professionals
Application forms and test procedures are available at Thesi.
Complaint / Suggestion
In the event of a complaint or suggestion to the laboratory, a dedicated form is available on Thesi.
Don't forget to include your contact details so that the laboratory can provide you with a response.
