Activities
The Biological Resources Center of the Centre François Baclesse (CFB), known as CRB BIOREVA, specializes in the preparation, conservation and provision of high-quality biological samples to help advance cancer research projects.
Our main tasks:
Improving patient care:
- The CRB stores tumor samples taken during treatment for further analysis, optimizing patient care and treatment.
Support for clinical research :
- The CRB prepares and stores samples from patients enrolled in clinical trials, contributing to the development of new therapies.
Advances in cancer research :
- The BRC builds up collections of biological samples targeted on different types of cancer, thereby fostering research studies and the development of innovative therapeutic strategies.
The BRC facilitates access to high-quality biological samples and associated data for researchers and pharmaceutical laboratories, accelerating progress in cancer research.
Diversity of samples
Multiple provenance :
The BRC centralizes biological samples from a variety of sources, including the François Baclesse Center and other partner healthcare establishments and research teams.
Wide range of samples :
- Biological samples managed by CRB BIOREVA can be of various kinds:
- Tissues (biopsies, surgical specimens)
- Blood and blood derivatives: serum, plasma, PBMC, buffy coat, etc.
- Hair
- Biological fluids (cerebrospinal fluid, etc.)
- Urine
- Stool
- Ascites
- DNA/RNA
- Organoid lines
- ....
The variety of samples available enables us to meet the needs of a wide range of research projects.
Expertise and services :
The BRC can also provide advice and methodology to help you draw up the laboratory manual for your research project (expertise in the preparation and storage of biological samples), or build up collections of biological samples in compliance with quality standards and regulatory requirements.
The CRB works in partnership with the laboratories of the Centre François Baclasse and the ANTICIPE research unit (INSERM U1086), which have technical skills and expertise in their fields (pathology department, cancer biology and genetics laboratory, ORGAPRED organoid platform, etc.), enabling us to offer a wide range of technical services.
- Expertise and advice for the design and creation of biological samples
- Managing the regulatory aspects of biobanking
- Preparation of simple and complex samples
- Expertise on preparation protocols and storage conditions
- Provision of annotated human biological samples
- Creation of bio-collections and centralization of biological samples for large multicenter cohorts,
- Handling of samples as part of academic and industrial clinical research protocols,
- Hosting collections and centralizing clinical trial samples
- Quality control of samples and associated data
- Safe storage of samples at different temperatures
- Sample transport logistics management (IATA)
Technical resources
Storage space
Samples are stored at very low temperatures to preserve tissue and cell integrity.
The CRB's 180m2 premises are fully air-conditioned and secure, with -80°C freezers, -150°C freezers, -20°C freezers and -196°C liquid-phase and gas nitrogen cylinders for long-term sample preservation.
Each preservation cabinet is equipped with a temperature sensor that continuously monitors the temperature and is connected to the Centre François Baclesse's security control center, enabling rapid intervention in the event of a problem.
The CRB also stores paraffin-embedded tissues at room temperature.
Laboratory
The BRC is equipped with laminar flow hoods, centrifuges, benchtop equipment, a microtome and cryostat for biological sample preparation.
Sample management software
The CRB's samples are recorded in the "Mbiolims" biological sample management software, guaranteeing complete traceability and quality of samples and associated data from the moment the sample is taken to the moment it is made available.
The software ensures the confidentiality of patient data, and enables pseudo-anonymization of samples in compliance with current RGPD legislation.

Sample valuation
1 - Requests to obtain biological samples or build up collections via the CRB BIOREVA project description form.
2 - Study and validation
- Feasibility study by CRB
- Scientific relevance review
- Financial analysis
3 - Contractualization by means of a Contract validated by the WMC legal department: detailing the responsibilities and commitments of the parties involved, the framework for sample use, biological risks, ownership of scientific results, etc.
The CRB relies on the CFB's Scientific Advisory Board and the CFB's Translational Group to assess the relevance of its storage, availability and valorization policy.
Regulations
The BRC complies with the legislation and regulations in force (Public Health Code and Jardé Law) concerning the storage and provision of samples for research purposes:
- Ethical aspects :
- Obtaining the patient's consent or non-objection after having been informed of the use of biological resources
- Regulatory aspects
- Declaration of biological collections to the Ministry of Health and Research
- Authorization to make available and export abroad
- Privacy
- CNIL declaration and RGPD compliance
What's more, the CRB respects best practices in its activities and is committed to a rigorous quality approach. The CRB is currently certified to the NFS 96 900 standard, and is in the process of obtaining ISO 20387 certification.
CRB BIOREVA is a member of the Club 3CR network of biobanks, the RIBBON network and the UNICANCER network of biobanks.
