Innovative lighting systems have been installed at the Baclesse Center to improve patient comfort in the recovery room and in a radiotherapy waiting room. Inspired by the concepts of “light windows” and “light ceilings,” these systems display images of blue skies and natural landscapes to recreate a sense of openness and natural light.
Much more than mere decorative elements, these installations help create a soothing and welcoming atmosphere, profoundly transforming the experience patients have throughout their care journey.
Improving patient comfort and experience: Light affects well-being
In the operating room, during the delicate period of waking up, patients are greeted by a soft, enveloping light above them. This atmosphere helps reduce the stress and feelings of disorientation that are commonly experienced after surgery. A soothing lighting environment thus promotes a more peaceful awakening.
In the radiation therapy department, located in the basement, these systems compensate for the lack of natural light. However, numerous studies have shown the importance of light in regulating biological rhythms and psychological well-being. Even when artificially reproduced, light that evokes the sky and nature helps maintain a sense of time and provides a feeling of comfort that is particularly valuable during radiation therapy sessions.
These improvements are part of a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing patient comfort and well-being within care areas. A welcoming and serene hospital environment—whether in terms of visuals, sound, or lighting—plays a significant role in how patients experience their care. Lighting, in particular , serves as a valuable support: it helps reduce anxiety and promotes relaxation.
By transforming spaces that are sometimes perceived as anxiety-inducing into more welcoming and comforting environments, these installations offer patients a moment of respite and serenity throughout their treatment.
