On World Cancer Day, the Baclesse Center announces the official creation of its "Patients & Families Group."The patient experience is at the heart of the Center's activities, and the idea is to strengthen its commitment to providing more humane care that is tailored to patients' real needs.
An approach based on patient experience
For several years now, the Centre Baclesse has been conducting in-depth research into the patient experience, which encompasses all interactions between a patient and the healthcare system. These interactions are influenced by both the organization of care and the life history of each individual.
With this in mind, following the creation of a dedicated working group in 2021 and the recruitment of a patient-partner in 2022 (with a new position to be filled in 2025), the Patients & Loved Ones Committee has taken an essential step forward. It involves patient and family volunteers in a process of co-construction of institutional projects with healthcare professionals.
Professor Roman ROUZIER, General Manager of the Centre Baclesse, emphasizes:
"The creation of the Patients & Families Committee is fully in line with our institutional project. The patient experience is one of the pillars of our strategy and quality policy, with the ambition of transforming our organization so that it better meets the expectations of patients and their families. This innovation demonstrates our commitment to placing people at the heart of our actions."
In addition, as part of its facility project, the Centre Baclesse aims to take the patient experience even further. This involves a genuine partnership with patients and their families, whether in terms of organizational, architectural or research projects, or even signage for the facility. The Center also aims to improve the collection and use of patient experience through tools such as PREMS and PROMS, as well as the analysis of verbatims, in order to better understand how patients experience their care journeys.
Listening for action: clear objectives
"Today, we assume what patients expect, but we don't always ask them directly. This group aims to incorporate patients' voices into the design of projects and care pathways from the outset. This will improve information, reception, and overall care, while enriching the vision of caregivers."
explains Dr Carine SEGURA-DJEZZAR, coordinator of the Patients & Relatives Group, and President of the CME.
The main tasks of the Patients & Relatives Group are to:
- Participate in strategic discussions on themes proposed by the Centre,
- Contribute to the drafting and proofreading of documents for patients and their families,
- To be consulted on the introduction of new practices or innovations in care,
- Speak at conferences and public events to share their experiences.
An innovative, collaborative structure
Made up ofaround twenty volunteer members (patients and relatives), accompanied by professionals from the Centre Baclesse, the Committee will meet quarterly. Its opinions and analyses will be totally free and independent. This participative approach, based on collective intelligence, aims to bring about lasting changes in care practices.
A health partnership for a better quality of life
"By involving patients and their loved ones in its strategic decisions, the Baclesse Center aims to offer more personalized support that respects the real expectations of those concerned. This group responds to an urgent need and is fully in line with the Center's humanistic philosophy. It is about rethinking the healthcare system through the lens of those who are its primary stakeholders."
says Michael CANOVAS, Deputy General Manager of the Centre.
