What is it?
Supportive care refers to all the care and support required by patients, alongside specific treatments where available, throughout the course of serious illnesses.
- Their aim is to contribute to the overall quality of care for people with cancer.
This is why access to supportive care must be available from diagnosis, during the curative and/or palliative phase and right through to the post-cancer phase, wherever the patient is, in hospital or at home.
- Supportive care is not a new specialty. It is defined as a coordinated organization of the different skills involved in patient management, in conjunction with specific oncology care.
- Supportive cancer care has been promoted by the latest Cancer Plans and by the current 10-year strategy to combat cancer 2021-2030 of the President of the Republic, where it is included in axis 2 of the strategy, entitled "Limiting sequelae and improving patients' quality of life," with high-quality supportive care that must be offered, accessible, and scalable in order to best meet patients' needs.
